Dia 16 de Fevereiro foi um dia seguro para manifestantes no Bahrein, com as forças policiais à distância e deixando que seguissem sem entraves. O dia marcou uma mudança completa da brutalidade policial que os manifestantes enfrentaram no 2º dia de atividades, que resultou na morte de dois manifestantes.
O protesto parece ter sido iniciado em sites de redes sociais, a ter como demandas as reformas constitucionais, econômicas e sociais -tal como se viu no Egito-, com pessoas de diferentes contextos sociais a se juntar ao longo do ato. A morte de manifestantes, em particular, atraiu a simpatia de espectadores, que inicialmente planejavam ficar à distância dos protestos.
Manifestantes agora acampam na Rotatória Pérola, um monumento na capital Manama, onde dizem que ficarão até que suas demandas sejam atendidas. Essas demandas, porém, só aumentam enquanto os manifestantes balançam entre exigir reformas na monarquia constitucional e clamar pelo fim do regime como um todo.
Enquanto isso, um grupo de tuiteiros liderou uma campanha para a limpeza da rotatória, chamada Lulu em árabe, onde manifestantes pintaram uma lista de demandas em graffiti. A iniciativa teve como líder o usuário de Twitter Mohammed Al Maskati, que tuíta como @emoodz
Também no dia 16, cresciam as reclamações sobre a internet lenta; inclusive o jornalista do New York Times, Nicholas Kristof, que está em Bahrein, fez barulho no Twitter sobre essa inconveniência. Na internet, usuários de Twitter reclamavam do número de websites bloqueados pelo governo bareinita, inclusive serviços de transmissão de vídeo ao vivo, estabelecidos por netcidadãos na Rotatória Pérola para que as pessoas em casa pudessem acompanhar o desenrolar dos eventos.
